One of the most promising types of solar cells has a few drawbacks. A scientist at Michigan Technological University may have overcome one of them.

Dye-sensitized solar cells are thin, flexible, easy to make and very good at turning sunshine into electricity. However, a key ingredient is one of the most expensive metals on the planet: platinum. While only small amounts are needed, at $1,500 an ounce, the cost of the silvery metal is still significant.

NRL achieves highest open-circuit voltage for quantum dot solar cells

U.S. Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) research scientists and engineers in the Electronics Science and Technology Division have demonstrated the highest recorded open-circuit voltages for quantum dot solar cells to date. Using colloidal lead sulfide (PbS) nanocrystal quantum dot (QD) substances, researchers achieved an open-circuit voltage (VOC) of 692 millivolts (mV) using the QD bandgap of a 1.4 electron volt (eV) in QD solar cell under one-sun illumination.

China imposes new solar industry guidelines

The Chinese government has issued new regulations requiring domestic PV manufacturers to not only invest in the expansion of production capacities, but also in research and development and quality control.

The Chinese Ministry of Industry and Information Technology ( MIIT ) has announced new regulations for domestic photovoltaic manufacturers.

New solar cell structure sets record

A new world record efficiency for solar sunlight conversion has been set by a cell structure with four solar sub-cells. The solar cell has managed to hit a new record efficiency of 44.7% and is the brainchild of researchers from the Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems ISE, Soitec, CEA-Leti and the Helmholtz Center Berlin.

Record Solar Energy PV Shipment Levels in Second Quarter of 2013

altThe latest NPD Solarbuzz Module Tracker Quarterly has been released and shows that quarterly solar photovoltaic (PV) module shipments for the second quarter of 2013 exceeded 5.8 GW, a 21% growth over second quarter-2012 levels.

The figures released in the latest report represent the shipping levels for the leading 20 PV manufacturers around the world, and will finalised over the coming weeks.

Rural Power from Pico and Hybrid PV Explored

Two new reports on rural electrification applications for pico and hybrid PV systems have been published by the Photovoltaic Power System Programme from the International Energy Agency (IEA PVPS).

The reports come from the IEA-PVPS Task 9 group, working on Deploying PV services for regional development, and conclude that with decreasing PV prices, PV/diesel hybrid mini-grids and pico PV are attracting significant attention from institutions in charge of rural electrification and donor agencies.
